Yoga In Harmony

Schedule

Monday, Wednesday 6:30am & 9:00-10:15am,

 Friday's   9:00 -10:15am

Welcome to all who would like to learn more about the practice of yoga. Yoga is a pathway to bring the mind and the senses under control that we may come to know our true nature. Asthanga yoga comprises 8 limbs or steps that guide us along that pathway to living in such a way that fosters spiritual growth.

Class time at Harmony will largely be based on the third limb of yoga, asana (the physical practice of the postures) while weaving in the other limbs. The particular style taught here is vinyasa. Vinyasa yoga is characterized by dynamically connecting postures with the breath, creating a flow between the more static poses. Essentially th e breath dictates the movement by following the natural instinct to inhale while creating openness and exhale when contracting. Breath links the mind and the body enabling one to stay calm, focused, aware and grounded. The journey between, into and out of the postures is equally as potent as the postures themselves. Transitional movements are employed to elongate and release the body between postures that work in different directions.

Combining movement with the specific breathing practice, ujjayi (powerful breath) cultivates heat, which leads to purification of the body through increased circulation and sweating, and improves flexibility. The breath is also used to pace the practice and bring more awareness to how one is practicing. Roughness, shortness or unevenness of the breath indicates forcefulness, while evenly rhythmic breathing reveals a sign of attentiveness and care.

The challenges that arise during the physical practice offer opportunities to make healthy choices. Do we get caught up in the negativity of self-criticism and re-activeness thereby creating more tension and disharmony? Or do we choose acceptance of what is present and work peacefully with care and patience resulting in a more balanced, peaceful self? The exploration of our selves through movement is best undertaken with great focus and concentration…what beneficial characteristics to cultivate. Our yoga program provides a safe environment that promotes optimal health for the body, mind and spirit while learning from issues that will arise during class time. We practice on the mat what we would like to offer to the world.

Our classes are offered as a multi-level practice. Realize that though you will be participating in a group environment, you should feel comfortable about making any modifications necessary to honor your specific needs moment by moment. We are probably more different than alike; we have different bone structures, sizes, ranges of mobility, etc. Each day we, ourselves alter due to natural and incidental changes that occur throughout the course of daily living. A key aspect of yoga is to learn to lovingly accept what we have to work with at any time, without criticism and practice in a way that brings about physical, mental and emotional health.

Please bring to class a yoga sticky mat, water, towel and any props you prefer such as yoga blocks and strap. Wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in, but nothing too baggy. Refrain from eating at least two hours before practicing.
